Kalighat art, originating from the Kalighat region of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) in West Bengal, India, is a style of Indian folk art characterized by its vibrant colors, bold lines, and themes often drawn from mythology, religion, and contemporary social issues. While Adam and Eve, as figures from Christian theology, are not typically featured in traditional Kalighat art, artists in this style often adapt their subjects to reflect broader cultural and religious themes.
Maa Kali In Kalighat Painting: In Kalighat paintings, Maa Kali is often depicted as a fierce and powerful goddess. She is usually shown with dark skin, wearing a garland of skulls and a skirt made of human arms, symbolizing destruction and rebirth. Maa Kali often has multiple arms, holding weapons and the severed head of a demon, representing her role in conquering evil. Her tongue is typically extended, and her eyes are wide and intense, emphasizing her fearsome and wild nature. The paintings use strong contrasts and vivid colors to portray her as a force of both destruction and protection.
