About the workshop

Enjoy the learning of  "Dashawataar in Pattachitra painting" form using traditional motifs and techniques with national awardee artist Mr. Bhaskar Mohapatra

Pattachitra is an ancient art form from Odisha, India, dating back to the 12th century. Chitrakars use 100% natural colors from conch shells and minerals to create intricate paintings on surfaces like cloth, palm leaves, wood, and jewelry. The art depicts Hindu mythological stories, particularly around Lord Jagannath, Vaishnavism, and local folk tales, reflecting Odia tradition. Evolving, Pattachitra adapted to British and European tastes in the 19th century, preserving its rich legacy with vibrant colors and intricate details, offering a captivating visual representation of Odia culture.

Dashawataar in Pattachitra painting: This Pattachitra painting of Dashavatar portrays the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu, each representing a different era and purpose. These avatars—Matsya (fish), Kurma (turtle), Varaha (boar), Narasimha (half-lion), Vamana (dwarf), Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, and Kalki—are beautifully arranged in vibrant detail. Each form symbolizes the victory of good over evil and the protection of dharma. The painting uses intricate patterns, bold lines, and earthy colors like red, green, and yellow to bring the avatars to life. It reflects devotion and artistry, celebrating Vishnu’s role as the preserver of the universe.
