Enjoy the learning of "Navadurga: The Nine Divine Forms of Goddess Durga in Pattachitra " form using traditional motifs and techniques with national awardee artist Mr. Bhaskar Mohapatra
Pattachitra is an ancient art form from Odisha, India, dating back to the 12th century. Chitrakars use 100% natural colors from conch shells and minerals to create intricate paintings on surfaces like cloth, palm leaves, wood, and jewelry. The art depicts Hindu mythological stories, particularly around Lord Jagannath, Vaishnavism, and local folk tales, reflecting Odia tradition. Evolving, Pattachitra adapted to British and European tastes in the 19th century, preserving its rich legacy with vibrant colors and intricate details, offering a captivating visual representation of Odia culture.
Navadurga: The Nine Divine Forms of Goddess Durga in Pattachitra: This exquisite Pattachitra painting portrays Navadurga, the nine sacred manifestations of Goddess Durga, each worshipped during the nine days of Navratri. The artwork presents the goddesses seated gracefully within beautifully decorated temple arches, each accompanied by her distinctive vehicle and symbolic attributes. The nine forms—Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri—represent different aspects of divine strength, wisdom, courage, compassion, and spiritual enlightenment. Intricate linework, ornate jewelry, vibrant natural colors, and decorative floral borders highlight the exceptional craftsmanship of Odisha’s traditional Pattachitra style. The symmetrical composition and temple-inspired architecture create a sacred and devotional atmosphere, emphasizing the unity of the nine forms of the Goddess. Each deity carries symbolic weapons and objects that signify the triumph of righteousness over evil and the protection of devotees. Overall, the painting celebrates the spiritual significance of Navadurga while preserving the rich artistic heritage and storytelling tradition of Pattachitra.
