Introduction

Pattachitra is a traditional Indian cloth painting from Odisha, dating back over 1,000 years. Originating near the Jagannath Temple in Puri, it began as a ritualistic practice. The name combines "Patta" (cloth) and "Chitra" (painting).

Pattachitra depicts Hindu mythology, including epics and deities like Lord Jagannath and Krishna. It evolved into a storytelling medium, blending religious devotion with artistic expression.

Artistic Style

The artistic style of Pattachitra is defined by intricate details and bold colors. It follows traditional rules set by the ancient Indian Chitrakar community. The art features elaborate borders and uses natural colors. The canvas is prepared from cloth through a specific process. Figures in Pattachitra have elongated eyes, round faces, and ornate designs. Symbolism plays a key role in its depiction. The paintings have a lyrical quality, reflecting themes of song and dance. The style is disciplined and adheres to established conventions. It emphasizes both aesthetic appeal and cultural storytelling.
