Artist Saju MP teaches vibrant Kerala mural painting with patience.
Imagine coming from a family of artists with several years of learning and a responsibility to maintain the traditions. That's Saju MP's background. This young mural painting artist from Kerala is the upholder of a vibrant tradition of mural art works at temples, churches, and various institutions. Kerala mural painting dates back to the 8th century and had its golden age in 13th century. Important topics include Ganesh pooja, Krishna Leela and other mythological themes.

Saju is a student of the famed Guruvayur temple Devaswom-run Institute of Mural Painting with extensive training in fine arts, art history and mural art. The temple, which is renowned for its exquisite murals, set up the Institute in 1989 to train youngsters so that the art form could survive.

Along with upholding traditional techniques, Saju also updates himself with newer themes and teaching methods. Take for example his online lessons for Catterfly art students. He is known for patiently explaining this difficult art form - the drawing, the motifs, the colour mixing and the finishing - to students from across the world. A great way to keep up this rich tradition!

Listen to Saju explaining the intricacies of mural painting in this Catterfly Open House - Kerala Mural Painting held recently.
