About Art

This is an intricate work that is the true hallmark of a skilled artist like Bhaskar Mohapatra. Pattachitra, originating in the 12th century Odisha, India, is an ancient art form using 100% natural colours from conch shells and minerals. Chitrakars, the artists, craft intricate paintings on diverse surfaces like cloth, palm leaves, wood, and jewellery. The art narrates Hindu mythological stories, especially around Lord Jagannath and the Vaishnava sect, as well as local folk tales, providing insights into Odia tradition. The art's rich legacy includes masterpieces passed through generations, featuring vibrant colours, intricate details, and clear lacquer for preservation. Pattachitra remains a captivating visual representation of Odisha's culture and heritage, thanks to the adaptability of its artists across changing times.

Product Description

This painting features Lord Krishna’s Life Story in pattachitra. Lord Krishna is depicted in youthful grace, crowned with a peacock feather. He stands with one leg bent and  eyes closed in blissful embrace of his flute's enchanting melody, while his simple dhoti and rustic jewellery whisper of his pastoral connection. In Pattachitra painting, the intricate black or red border is crucial as it guides focus to the main content, adds beauty to traditional designs, and holds cultural or symbolic significance. Additionally, the border provides structural support, creating balance, and serves as an extra canvas for artists to express creativity through intricate detailing. This painting features different stories of Krishna's life right from his birth.

The artist narrates different tales like Vasudev and Devki being imprisoned by Kansa; Despite Kansa's paranoia, with Krishna in his arms, Vasudeva miraculously walking across the overflowing Yamuna, guided by the serpent Shesha; Kansa trying to kill the exchanged girl who miraculously transforms into the goddess Yogamaya, warning Kansa of his impending doom. Enraged by the above incident, Kansa continues sending demons to kill Krishna in Gokul. Kansa sends Putna, disguised as a loving nurse, to attempt to breastfeed Krishna with poisoned milk, but little Krishna recognizes her true nature and grasps her tongue, revealing her demonic form and defeating her. The artist has also depicted the scene of Lord Krishna defeating the snake Kalia, and playing flute while standing over his head. The scene of Lord Krishna lifting Mount Govardhan to protect Gokul from a deluge and many other leela’s of Lord Krishna is shown in the picture.
