About Art
Kalighat painting, or Kalighat Pat, originated in the 19th century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. These paintings were initially inspired by the goddess Kali, who represents Shakti, the active female energy in Hindu philosophy. Female subjects were often portrayed as strong and powerful in honor of Kali. Over time, Kalighat paintings expanded to include a variety of themes, such as mythological characters, festivals, and scenes from daily life and culture.
Today, only a small number of artists continue this art form in rural areas of West Midnapore and Birbhum in West Bengal. These artists focus on religious, secular, and contemporary themes, blending traditional techniques with modern styles. Historically, the artists, known as patuas, settled near the temple as Kolkata became an economic and religious hub.
The patuas originally created paintings on handmade paper scrolls, depicting long narrative scenes from Hindu mythology. These scrolls were unrolled as they traveled through rural Bengal, narrating the stories to villagers. The paintings were made with natural dyes derived from vegetables and minerals. Initially, the focus was on Goddess Kali and her victories over demons, but over time, the subjects expanded to include other deities and their tales. Later, the paintings began to depict everyday life, though the unique style of Kalighat painting remained consistent.

About the Master Artist
The Artist:- master artist Samir Chitrakar is from a tribal family in Midnapore, West Bengal. He is a generational Kalighat and Santhal artist and has conducted many art exhibitions.
