Kalam Patua's Kalighat style

Kalam Patua's Kalighat style represents a modern take on the traditional Kalighat paintings that began in 19th-century Bengal. While he preserves the core elements of the original art form, such as bold outlines and vibrant colors, he incorporates contemporary themes and intricate details. This fusion creates a dynamic blend of old and new, allowing his work to resonate with today's audience while maintaining a strong connection to Bengal's cultural history.
Kalam Patua explores modern subjects like urban life, love, family, politics, and social issues. His paintings often narrate everyday stories, such as romantic relationships, family moments, or daily struggles, giving his work a relatable and emotional touch. He also tackles social themes like urbanization, migration, and the changing dynamics of rural and urban India.
He portrays characters in modern attire, using elements like mobile phones, buses, and cityscapes, alongside traditional symbols like sarees, dhotis, and household scenes.

About the workshop

A city tour in Kalam Patua's Kalighat style is a modern interpretation of the traditional Kalighat paintings, infused with contemporary themes. Kalam Patua, known for revitalizing the Kalighat style, blends its signature bold outlines, flat colors, and minimal backgrounds with scenes of urban life.

In such a painting, a city tour might depict individuals in bustling cityscapes, traveling by buses, rickshaws, or scooters, highlighting the vibrancy and chaos of modern city life. The narrative often carries humor or social commentary, staying true to the satirical essence of traditional Kalighat art. The mix of traditional techniques with modern subjects makes this style uniquely engaging and relevant.

This style portrays how cities have evolved, blending traditional Indian values with modern lifestyles.

Distinctive Features Include:
Storytelling: A single painting could depict multiple moments of a city tour, arranged in a sequence like a comic strip.
Personal Touch: Patua enhances the traditional flat colors with intricate details and textures, giving his work a unique identity.
Playful Critique: Elements like pollution, overcrowding, or the tension between tradition and modernity are often cleverly incorporated into his art.
