About the workshop

Create a beautiful "Dashavatar with Scenic Backgrounds" Madhubani painting. Learn from our native master artist Ms. Hema Devi, a national award-winning artist from Bihar. She will teach the techniques and motifs of the art form and help you create a beautiful painting characterized by its bold colours and intricate designs.

Madhubani Painting - Madhubani painting, originating from Bihar, India, is a traditional folk art known for its vibrant colors and intricate patterns. Artists use natural dyes and depict Hindu mythology, nature, and daily life scenes. The paintings often feature bold outlines and geometric shapes, creating a unique and visually striking style. Dashavatar with Scenic Backgrounds: The Dashavatar depicts the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu, each symbolizing different stages of cosmic evolution. These include Matsya avatar, Kurma avatar, Varaha avatar, Narasimha avatar, Vamana avatar, Parashurama avatar, Rama avatar, Krishna avatar, Buddha avatar, and Kalki avatar. In this Madhubani painting, this theme is visually represented with intricate details. The background illustrates elements of nature, such as rivers, flowers, and leaves, signifying harmony and divine presence. This combination reflects a balance between mythology and nature.

Module 1: Drawing borders and customizing them to the theme.
Module 2: Create the central motif with a free-hand drawing
Module 3: Create secondary motifs of the Background
Module 4: Create the flowers around central and secondary motifs
Module 5: Detailing of the design around central and secondary motifs
Module 6: Detailing of the design continued 
Module 7: Drawing & detailing of lion
Module 8: Drawing & detailing of tortoise 
Module 9: Fill vibrant colors around the central motifs
Module 10: Fill vibrant colors around the central and supporting motifs
Module 11: Fill vibrant colors around the central and supporting motifs
Module 12: Fill vibrant colors in the border and add finishing touches

Materials Needed

  • Some Colored Drawing Sheets / Chart Papers / Canvas - 22*30 inches size
  • Pencils / Eraser / Sharpener
  • Black Color Pen / Thin Marker
  • Colors ( Any Water - Based - Poster / Fabric / Acrylic etc.) and Brushes (0 / 1 / 2 / 3 Number)
  • Rough Cloth
  • Water

About the Master Artist

Catterfly National Awardee artist for Madhubani Art, Mrs. Hema Devi comes from a family of Madhubani artists. Her mother Leela Devi and mother-in-law Subhadhra Devi are also national award winners. Apart from practicing the craft, she also teaches students the techniques of paper mache and Madhubani Art.
