About the Art& the workshop

Enjoy the learning of Pattachitra painting  "Rhythms of Life in Saura Trible Art  " using traditional motifs and techniques with national awardee artist Mr. Bhaskar Mohapatra

Saura Tribal Art iis a beautiful and ancient tribal art form from the state of Odisha. Created by the Saura tribe (one of India's oldest), these paintings are more than just decoration. It uses simple stick-like human figures, animals, birds, trees, and geometric patterns to narrate daily life, rituals, and beliefs.
The art symbolizes harmony between humans, nature, and the spiritual world.
The paintings are locally called Italons or Ikons. They are traditionally dedicated to Idital, the main deity of the Saura people.

Saura Tribal art is traditionally made on the red or brown clay walls of the homes of the villagers, with natural dyes made from rice, white stone, and flower and leaf extracts, using a brush that is made from tender bamboo. While Saura art is often compared to the famous Warli art of Maharashtra, it has its own unique "fingerprint":
The Fish-Net Method: Saura artists start by drawing the border first and then work their way inward toward the center.
Human Figures: Unlike Warli figures which have a clear "neck," Saura figures are more elongated and do not show a physical difference between men and women.
The Palette: Traditionally painted on red or brown clay walls using a brush made of bamboo shoots. The paint is usually white, made from a mixture of rice paste and water.
The Tree of Life: A recurring theme that symbolizes the tribe's deep spiritual connection to the forest and the universe.
