Discovering Pattachitra art: A Cultural Journey

Written by Smita Choudhary Jan 20, 2025
I got introduced to the Pattachitra art form through Catterfly monthly subscription classes and since then it has been a wonderful journey. I immediately fell in love with the minute-detailed work in the paintings and how nicely the artist was able to depict it. The borders, the background, the jewelry, the gestures…..and whatnot....The way all paintings light up by the use of white colour was so fascinating. The natural white color stands way ahead of its acrylic counterpart.

I had done so many challenging workshops with Bhaskarji including Rathyatra, Tirupathi Balaji, Tree of Life on palm leaf, painting on kettle/terracotta, Dashavtar, Holi celebration, and, the life of Krishna….and all experiences were worth the effort.

The way he explains and his down-to-earth behavior makes it all smooth along with the guidance of the Catterfly team..Visiting Raghurajpur while on my visit to Puri has been on my wishlist since then.

It was a delight to visit his house which was like an art museum in itself right from the doorstep. He showed me the various works he has been doing on the canvas, kettle, terracotta, tusser cloth, and palm leaf engraving to name a few…he also shared how he makes the cloth canvas.

We spent one hour there admiring his captivating creation which was indeed short for doing justice to his work..

The visit made me admire his talent and hard work and I feel grateful to get exposure to rich art forms of our nation through the Catterfly workshops.
