About the Art &Workshop
Santhal folk paintings, created by the Santhal tribes of Bengal, represent a unique folk art tradition defined by its own distinctive style.Origins of this people are Pre-Aryan Period around 3500–4000 year ago. The Santhal folk painting, drawn by the Santhal tribes living in Bengal, is a folk art with a distinctive style of their own.
The Santhal are the largest and one of the oldest tribes in India, They are spread across Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal. Originally Santhals were hunter-gatherers and known for clearing forests for agriculture. Presently they are mostly farmers. The Santhals are regarded as one of the economically poor communities of India.

The tribe celebrates even the smallest happy moments of one’s life with dance and music. Major customs are depicted in the painting - birth, hunting (one of the major customs since the origin of the tribe), marriage and death.
