Madhubani Workshops - Thoda Hatke..!

Written by Manjula Apr 04, 2021
The arrival of spring in the month of March infuses new energy and enthusiasm, it resonates with the sweet voice of the cuckoo. Nature gives us the opportunity to admire the variety of flowers and panoramic views.

Similarly, in the month of March Madhubani workshop went by like a cool breeze. We always have great discussions while curating the themes with our Madhubani Artist - Hema Ji, who has also received National Award for her work in Madhubani art. We said why not do a fusion of Madhubani and Mandala design this time. She said with great confidence that it is ok but I will make it in my own way and in my style :)

So, we started with Madhubani style fish in mandala style. She started with a border and made a very beautiful painting with a very intricate design and colour it with vibrant colors. She gave the effect of water with a very beautiful light blue which was very pleasing to the eye.

The next workshop was the famous Paper Mache for which Hema Ji has again honoured with great awards. Paper Mache method transforms ordinary paper into three-dimensional creations. On top of its decorative versatility and distinctive aesthetic, paper Mache is praised for its preparation. This workshop filled a different joy in our mind to create a product with the paper in a completely new innovative way. This is a very beautiful way to recycle paper.

Although this work is somewhat difficult in the beginning when the soaked paper was to be pulp beaten with a bat continuously. After making the paper pulp, she added Multani mitti and fevicol to it and knead it like a dough of flour. And while she started shaping it, I can't tell you how happy I was, new joy was stirring in my mind. After that, she applied the base structure with three coats with the same material. When the Vase and plate dried, Hema Ji used sandpaper to smoothen the surface. When she started painting, the beauty of the vase and the plate enhanced. After the painting was completed, she had a beautiful plate and vase in her hand, which she was happy to see. She showed me many more things made with paper Mache like a swan, a woman, Shiva, Saraswati Ji Vases, plates and so on.....!

She said that although it is an art of hard work, still she is not able to get a fair and proper price for her Paper Mache artwork.

Indeed it's a lot of hard work to make anything out of paper mache and artist like Hema Ji should get a proper return of this. We will try our best to promote her work and make it available to everyone. Do come learn and see the world of paper mache with Hema Ji :)
