Weaving Composition

Written by Ramya Udupa Jun 10, 2021
Hello Readers!!

I am back with another interesting experience on the new art. As you know, there are no boundaries for learning, Catterfly took us through a beautiful art called “Madhubani”, during our last month’s learning journey. As the name indicates, “Madhubani” is “forest of honey”.  Personally, this art is as sweet and intricate and has completely gone on its name.

Just to delve on its origination, Madhubani was originally from Mithila in Nepal and is also called as “Mithila art”. It is believed that King Janaka of Mithila had ordered his kingdom to decorate and paint the town on the wedding of his daughter Sita to Lord Rama. These paintings depict proliferation and fertility and are painted to celebrate special occasions and happiness.

Thy depict mostly men, nature, scenes, and deities from ancient epics. These are created by using fingers, twigs, brushes, nib pens and match sticks to create an eye-catchy intricated geometrical patterns. These are usually made of powdered rice. This art has five mainstream styles, Bharni, Katchini, Tantrik, Godna and Kobar.

Today, I would like to throw some light on Godna style of art. As we all know, tattooing has been part of India since ages and it is popularly known as “Godna”.  Godna art are largely composed of rows and concentric circles of flowers, fields, animals, figures, and spirits. This Godna art was introduced by Catterfly to us last week through Ms. Hemadevi, who taught us the details and origin of this exceptional art.

During the class, we created “Tree of Life” in Godna style as our contribution to the Environment Day. As you can observe, each bird in this art is of the same size. It took almost 7 hours for me to complete this beautiful piece and was extremely satisfied with the outcome. I have drawn around 250 birds in this art. Amazing experience!

Madhubani as an art itself is incredibly unique and the specialty is that there are no gaps or spaces left while painting. Each part is either filled with birds, flowers, animals, or maybe even small geometrical designs. The highlight of this art is all about eyes and nose. It embodies big and bold eyes and very prominent big nose, which stands out in the whole art.

Personally, this art is like writing a composition which we used to write during our school days. The art is like a composition, where you weave the story skillfully and patiently. You require utmost attention to detail and patience for this art and I am happy that I have gained more with this art and enjoyed the experience thoroughly. My association with Catterfly has made me bring out the artist and the writer in me 😊 and continue my thirst for art with intricacy, perfection, and patience.

As I continue my journey on art, encourage you all to bring out the artist in you! Special thanks to Catterfly team and National award winner Ms. Hemadevi for introducing me to this masterpiece.
