Celebrations and Festivals in Warli Art

Written by Mamta Thakur Apr 29, 2021
Like every other month, the Warli art sessions in April were filled with lots of fun and joy and Catterfly team curated many colorful themes related to important happenings and festivals in the month of April.  April is the time when the harvesting season in several parts of India starts and is also the beginning of new year for some communities.

Considering severe impact of COVID, we also wanted to lift up everyone's mood by focusing on the theme of "Celebration of Life" to lift up everyone's mood. This included themes related to Baisakhi, Gudi Padwa, Ram Navami and many others. In the last week of April we also did a painting on the theme of mirror image of Tarpa Dance. It is a beautiful tribal dance that is practiced by Warli tribe to celebrate special events and a musical instrument of the same name Tarpa is played by a central figure, with everyone dancing around him.

Our paintings included series of object related to culture, traditions, food and day to day celebrations as practiced by people of Warli region during these festivals. Catterfly team along with our master artists always tries to ensure that each participant is not only learning the smallest of details but also enjoys and understands the cultural underpinnings of Warli region. The April month has been tough for people across the country. Hope these beautiful Warli sessions have added a bit of comfort to everyone's life, who chose to participate.
