Finding finer points of Indian art online

Written by Brinda Menon Jul 14, 2021
Online classes on traditional Indian art forms from Catterfly have been a big draw for many during the lockdown. Brinda Menon from Mumbai on why she signed up for the hassle-free Catterfly workshops to learn Madhubani, Kerala mural painting, Gond and more

I have always been passionate about art but I never got to learn it professionally.

I have always wanted to learn Kerala mural painting. Earlier, I would have had to go to Guruvayur (famous Kerala temple town and centre of mural art) and stay there for a month or so to learn the art. That has changed with Catterfly's art workshops.

Here, sitting at home I have got an opportunity to learn Kerala mural painting, a difficult art form for beginners. It was mid-2020 when I happened to see a Catterfly ad on Facebook and got in touch with the team. They really helped me understand how Catterfly works and how the workshops are held.

To learn complex art forms like Pattachitra and Kerala mural painting, having good teachers is important. You also need a lot of patience to learn the Kerala style painting. Mr. Saju (mural artist Saju MP) has been wonderful in the way he teaches. He is so patient! He teaches so well about colours and how to mix various shades.

And this is the authentic way of doing the murals. I have seen a lot of Kerala mural classes online – on YouTube and elsewhere. But that’s not the way mural painting is actually done!

It is great that sitting at home one can learn this art form. The greatest advantage of learning these art forms from native artists is the kind of information you get about the culture, the art, and the nitty-gritties that you would never find on Google.

Also, the moderators are fantastic. They explain and help you out in case you have a doubt. If you or the artist have trouble communicating, they will help you out.

If you are unable to attend the live session, there are recorded sessions that you can get from Catterfly. If you have doubts there, the moderators clear them, either on the Google classroom or on the Whatsapp group.

You don’t feel lost when you are learning an art form from Catterfly workshops. My high? Getting to learn different art forms on one platform.
